Sorry for the OT post, but looking for pointers.

I need to build a machine with a lot of RAM (?16GB) and a lot of grunt.
Rather than going down the DSP route I thought I might try it on PC.  Cost
is not a problem (for once!)  anyone know anywhere to start?  I guess a
quad-processor machine with a stack of RAM might be a start.

Just think how quick it would play Solitaire.
