[OT] Want to learn a programming language

A little off topic, but possibly not...

I want to learn a useful programming language, but unsure which is best to
try/learn.

I have a bit of experience with writing ASP websites (manually coded using
Crimson, not ready made stuff), and connecting to ODBC's etc., so am
thinking that VB.NET might be a logical step ?

Would .net have any HA possibilities, as at present i'm not sure what i'd
want to write, would at least like to be able to make shared phonebooks and
stuff that i've written with ASP in proper windows rather than using .hta's
to make them look a bit like a proper windows program :)

Any advice appreciated.

Also pointers to suitable books would be good to.

Regards

Dean.
