I think it's worth trying as it would either point to a problem with
your line (i.e. his PC doesn't work) or a problem with MCE (his PC
*does* work).
Also try your PC at his house.

Perhaps unlikely, but always worth trying so you can eliminate it. FWIW,
when I had the BT caller-ID service that phone was plugged into a
secondary socket and ity seemed to work fine. It's possible something's
screwy with that particular extension, although if you've got no joy on
either of your two lines, it's probably unlikely.
