Before I bought TomTom (for PDA), I tried Mapopolis
(http://www.mapopolis.com/); it's
very cheap, mostly because you buy
maps as-required, down to eg US county level (at $20 a time).
However, being a US product, it was totally hopeless in the UK; it had
no concept of roundabouts at all, and just kept saying "turn left,
turn slightly right, turn slightly right, turn slightly right, turn
slightly right, turn left" when going round one!
But might be an option for short-term (cheap) US use?
