I think you can also activate serial numbering in the bios and most PCS?

If it's a networked machine.. why not just use the MAC address of the
LAN adapter ?.
It'll be a unique number and free but the downside is if you change the
adapter you'll need to update your records

nbtstat - a nameofmachine or -A machinesIpAddress should nicely show you
the MAC address at the bottom of the output.
