If the ruler was heated slightly, no snow would stick to it, hence reduced
drifting error.

Perhaps a metal rod mounted vertically, marked at 1" intervals (or
alternatively in centimetres for you kids), with some of that heater wire
that is used to stop pipes freezing wrapped around it.  Add the webcam and
away you go ;-)
