There's always the option of using OWA? (although, I can imagine that
wouldn't be too great as your regular client) or possibly a Terminal
Services client on the Mac?
It's the same thing as with Linux - too many of the developers are just so
into MS bashing that they don't realise just how good Outlook + Exchange
are
together.
We have developed our internal helpdesk system using COM addins to Outlook
2003 - I can't imagine a more powerful system to build a solution within,
but, of course, that means a Windows PC Desktop only...

The only MAPI compatible version of Outlook for the Mac is Outlook 2001
which is not OS X. Entourage 2004 claims to have Exchange support but it is
far from perfect. It relies on using Outlook's Web Client and also does not
support tasks.. Plus when you have used Outlook for all your life,
Entourage
is far from perfect.
Unless I am mistaken, there is no other MAPI client for Mac. As for IMAP,
that will not provide you with calendar, tasks, global address lists (can
be
done via LDAP but clunky).
