I wish! No I pay 13.74p per day standing charge on top of the electricity
charges.
just stuck my details in uswitch out of interest and the cheapest
alternative in my area is 7.1p /kWh...

8p is a lot - is that one of the "no standing charge" tariffs
that are

expensive for the first few hundred units?
You should be able to get that down to around 5.5p (and 2.5p for nighttime
if you have economy 7) by switching supplier.
