I had exactly the same problem with my machine nuking itself, and while
rebuilding at the weekend I noticed that Microsoft has got a Beta Spyware
blocker just available for download from their site.

It seems quite comprehensive.., although I've only been running it for a
couple of days. Not had any problems yet.

I used to use Spybot on my old machine without any problems too.
