Something that's worth trying is to use CDSpeed <http://www.tonec.com/cds>
to slow the drive down whilst ripping

I have some audio CDs that are so poorly made they vibrate like crazy when
spun in a CDROM drive, it must play havoc with the poor pickup head trying
to focus....

The ones I've tried so far do rip (using EAC and Lame) - but
playing them
back makes it unlistenable as they have drop outs or clicks every few
seconds.
