Indeed, only use ulaw/alaw (g711) for any sort of modem/fax unless you have
T.38.
codecs like g729/g723 are designed to compress audio and eliminate
frequencies
we can't hear - computers can hear better ;) so need uncompressed audio.

The latency is also a huge factor anything bigger than a few ms and you'll
run into
problems. This is going to be the #1 cause of failures (if you've switched
to g711).

As for echo, well IME modems and faxes seem to quite like it :) definately
turn of any echo
can.

How often do these sky boxes need to phone home?
