Well, spurred on by your yeast laden suggestion, I remembered the Buffalo
units come with a black lens cover (as well as the clear one). Now, I
could be wrong but I think it's just made a massive difference !

We did have a customer the other week tell us he had great results by
putting his IR receiver in a brown glass beer bottle ... not really
something we can advise as a cure on the website of course but you may get
away with it. ;-)
