RE: Media Server options

Ah yes, I forgot to mention those didn't I... I had come across those ones
=
on Span (their site is a pig to search!) Nothing against those, except
they=
are =A330-odd dearer than the supermicro's are at Scan... and I can't see =
if they are available in black (I have emailed them to ask)...
=20
I had thought of using an external drive enclosure, but I don't have any
sp=
are space in the rack, and I'd previously specifically bought this 4U case
=
with the ntention of making it my main storage server... - I don't need
suc=
h a big case for any other reason...

Span do some: http://www.span.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=3D28_1201_1253&os=
Csid=3Df49238c0839ee4067d9810f7aa782e3b

I've been looking into this recently after buying an SATA RAID setup, but
f=
or cheapness just cannibalised and old 486 machine that wasn't doing
anythi=
ng, and used the case to house the external drives.

OK, so my new media server is nearly ready to be assembled... - I've just
o=
rdered 2TB of disks (oh yeah baby!) - I've ordered 5 x 400GB WD SATA
drives=
(I even paid the extra =A39/drive for the RAID edition model) which I'm pi=
cking up on Friday morning...

The only item I now need to get before assembly can begin is a SATA RAID
en=
closure to put them in... I need to use a 5-in-3 cage, since I have a 4U
ra=
ck case that has two lots of 3 x 5.25" bays (i.e. 6 bays), but I have
to us=
e at least one of them for an optical drive, so I have a free 3-bay space
o=
n one side, but only a 2-bay space on the other. - I want to be able to
put=
8 drives in eventually (I've an 8 port controller) - this will give me som=
e expansion capability in the future (I'm projecting that the 5 disks I'm
s=
tarting out with will only last me till about the end of 2006!), so I need
=
a 5-in-3 and also a 3-in-2 to fit 8 drives in the available space.

The only 5-in-3's that I've found so far are:

Supermicro CSE-M35T-1
Icy Dock MB810SKF

Does anybody know of any others? - I'm preferring the Supermicro at the
mom=
ent, - the Icy Dock looks a bit "industrial" from what I've seen,
and the S=
upermicro is available at Scan for just a shade over =A390... - quite a
bi=
t less than anyone else seems to have it for...

All suggestions welcome...

Paul G.
