RE: Re: Budget network attached storage?

I have a freecom 400Gb "NAS" drive
(http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=18721)
which also requires a
driver to be installed if you just plug it into the LAN.

And to use it for the MAC, you have to format it as FAT32 not NTFS (the
default).

Solution? I plugged it into the USB2 port on my shuttle server and then
shared that from within SBS

Okay so this is "cheating" but it means security still works, the
showcenter can read off it (just another drive in the server), no special
software required etc.

It's a nice compact little unit too - if a tad heavy!.
Okay, so I can't just shove it into node0 attached to a switch, but am
happy with this config.
Hope to get more but they WILL go on the lan as will be strictly backup
devices and not extra storage as the current one is.

Would like a "proper" NAS solution but they do seem damned
expensive :(

just my 2p worth.

cheers,

Tony
