Are there any other services or apps. running that you don't need - i.e.
anti-virus.?

I have a similar issue but with visual effects for audio running on a very
slow old laptop. I stop some services (disk manager admin service,cd
burning
etc etc)  and stop internet traffic via the software firewall and all is
well - YMMV
