Interestingly, this is a standard feature of many Israeli hospitals and
even hotels.

Under traditional Jewish law, you aren't allowed to "start a
fire" on
the Sabbath, and some Rabbis have interpreted turning on a light to be
starting a fire.

The solution is to have lights that are on from Friday evening (the
start of the Sabbath) until Saturday evening, but hidden by a lightproof
shutter expect when required.
