I think you are on the right lines, however if the Node 0 is only 70cms
deep I suppose you won't have rear access to any rack mounted equipment
?

I think this needs careful thought. If you plan not to have rear access
to equipment you will need to do a lot of extra work with cable
management. I'm not saying it can't be done but it will require more
effort.

Maybe you could plan for racks to pull forward into the room for working
on and then push them back and close the door afterwards? This takes a
lot of room as well, unless you are a very skinny person, not typical on
this list...

You will need to arrange for air changes (ventilation). It is always
better if you can use this air rather than exhaust it into the fresh
air, after all its your electricity that is heating it...

What I am saying is cable management / routing is the key. Do you have
height that you can use, my Node 0 is 2.8 metres high and I route all
the cables from above.

apologies in advance for the length, but the upshot is i need some
advice on ventilation of a small node 0 in an outhouse! please read
on...

I'm about to create a new node zero in an outbuilding. I've already
got about 50 runs of cat5 and a dozen coax's going in there from the
house, securely deep underground. Now I need to start building the
guts and make it do something.

What we - me and the builders - are planning on doing is building a
partition wall in the outhouse to section off node 0 from the rest of
the room. this will leave a space for node zero of just over 2m wide,
and 70 cm deep.

there'll be large sliding doors on the wall, made to look like the
back wall. so if anyone breaks in they'll just see a few tools etc and
leave (with the tools no doubt!)

node 0 itself will house the usual collection of pc's, digiboxes,
freeview boxes, racks, network panels, etc etc. they'll be quite a bit
of heat coming out of all the equipment.

the outhouse itself is a 9" solid wall apart from the 2m wide back
wall where node zero will be. this is a single 4.5" wall which goes to
an outside toilet next door (part of the same building, ie, this wall
is really an internal wall). the end wall is 9" as well of course,
with a large wooden door.

i'm worried about ventilation. how hot will it get in the summer,
should i add anything to manually take the heat out? what about the
winter, could it get too cold in there for the equipment? there is a
new roof on the building and it is waterproof.

i'd welcome any advice anyone can offer on this.
