I have just smoked a cheap modulator trying to run it from the same 12v
plugpack
as the camera it was modulating.

The modulator for some reason had the barrel of the connector +ve, and
connected
to the shields of the in and the out, and the -ve tip of the dc socket was
(well
it still is I guess) connected into the circuitry via a -5v regulator. When
the video in shield was connected, it took out a few tracks on the PCB in
the
modulator. Oops..
