If you are looking for something low cost take a look at 1-Wire and the=20
DS-2406 switch (http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/2907)=20
(Also an eight bit version=20
http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/3818).
Easy to work with=20
and real low node cost.
We also have some rail road enthusiast working with the Very Simple=20
Control Protocol (http://www.vscp.org)
and there will be some stuff=20
available there for that kind of control situations.=20
