I'll second that - I did some network wiring for a charitable
organisation a few months ago where a spurious master socket meant that
their ADSL connection would only work properly if the fax machine was
unplugged, regardless of filters.  Took ages to work out what was going
on, as the place was full of botchy modifications of modifications made
by 'so-and-so's husband who works in IT', and the line in question was
sharing cabling with one of the PBX extensions, for added confusion value.
