Sounds like you're watching a mixture of 16:9 format and 21:9 format
stuff. Most projected film formats (ie what you watch in the cinema) are
21:9. Sometimes they're masked down to 16:9 for DVD, and widescreen TV
material is usually either 16:9 or masked 14:9 (which can also be masked
the other way for 12:9 aka 4:3).
Not much you can do about it unless you want to distort the image
(stretch it vertically) or lop the sides off...
