AIUI they are coded, usually on a rolling basis. There are some
universal openers (which were the subject of legal action IIRC)
available in the US whch exploited the fact that most manufacturers
allow for the remote to reset the rolling code (e.g. when the battery
is changed in the key fob). I guess you might get lucky if you have a
cheap-and-cheerful opener, and be able to reverse engineer the bit
stream, but life is pretty short isn't it?
