OT: Rubbing down for cinema paint

I've started putting the ScreenGoo on my wall for the projector screen,
and I want to ensure the flattest paint finish I can (without spraying).

I remember seeing a painter/decorator once rub down with something after
rollering the paint on to flatten it down - wasnt sandpaper.

Anyone know what he might have used ? He stuck it on the end of his paint
pole - was a flat square of sorts - and then rubbed the walls down.
Produced a fair bit of dust but got a lovely finish.
