athlon mobos

Hello,

I read something about Athlon motherboards, saying that the old socket
A  Athlon & Duron boards were not ideal for use with newer Athlon xps,
since  they  did not support the additional commands within the Athlon
xp. I read this on the web in passing, and cannot remember where. What
are  these  additional  commands, and what performance benefit do they
give? Which chips have them?

I  ask  because  I  have  upgraded  my processor but not the mobo; I'm
wondering whether I should. The only problem is, I think new mobos are
agp  x8  only,  which  means I have to spend $$$ to buy a new graphics
card too ;(
