TiVo/alternatives

I've been looking at the TiVo site today - there are obviously a good
number
of people on this list who have one.
Is it a good idea to go down this route now, or are there alternatives that
might be more suitable (eg Media Center)? If it is still the best way to
go, is it best to pick up a 2nd hand unit, and add a cheap DVD recorder?
