Funnily enough, I had best success when I was able to bash it in with as
few hits as possible :-)
Multiple hits seemed to fatigue the nail, causing it to buckle...

That was the original plan, and will be the plan for any subsequent
cable routing outside (40mm solvent weld waste pipe seems most economic
- £16 per 30m from screwfix). That'll have to wait though, as the
intended destination (node0 location) might end up being demolished and
rebuilt in the not too distant future...

Cheers for the advice chaps - drilling and small rawplugs sounds like a
plan unless I can find a cheap air powered cable clipper...
