RE: Length of tails from Electrical Meter to Consumer Unit

Hi Paul
=20
Yes you can, but thats up to you :) - regardless the board would expect
local protection of the tails or armoured cable, otherwise you could end up
with a infinite length of cable capable of carrying a large capacity but
with nothing other than the board cut out for protection - they dont like
that !!
=20
Personally, and professionally i would not be comfortable that the only
thing between me/customer and a 100amp backed cable is two layers of PVC.
I've seen contractors do it, and under BS its not wrong (NICEIC agree that
its not wrong but not particularly professional approach), but its gives me
the heebie-geebies to thing that in a ceiling void someone could screw up
through a plasterboard ceiling skew out of a joist and straight into a
100amp backed cable.
=20
If you're going to go down the PVC/PVC route then make doubley sure that if
its in a ceiling void make sure it is as far away from floor and ceiling as
possible, i.e. down the middle of the joists. Regs require 50mm to the face
of the plasterboard or floor.
=20
WIth regard to the 100amp MCB, i assume you're thinking of plascing this
externally ? - Certainly its up to you where you put in and how you protect
it. Unfortunately if your meter is external it only takes someone about 5
secs to cut and pull the supply company fuse...
=20
We do a lot of work on places with meters/consumer units in external
insecure binstores, again i dont like the idea that any p*sshead walking
down the street could open the cupboard and turn the electric off for a
laugh - but hey that might be me just being a bit paranoid.
=20
As an idea of costs, for a recognised brand ie Hager/Wylex you should pay
around =A365.00 for a 100amp DP MCB and enclosure, 25mm 3core armoured, i
guess they will be looking for =A33.00 a metre, but could be trying for a
l=
ot
more. We currently get something around 98.5% of trade on cable, so if they
offer you anything less than 75% they're trying to rip you off. If you go
for 6181Y double insulated, about 80p a metre i guess. plus 16mjm 6491X GY
for the earth around 50p/metre. If you go armoured you will need BW25S
glands and shrouds to terminate the armoured, probably no more than =A32.50
for a pack of 2.
=20
Hope this helps in the dark art of Electrical Contracting, best you do it
now as of next year Part P will be in and you shouldnt do things like this
without people like us :)
=20
Any other info you require just shout.

Dean.

Dean,

Many thanks for your response.

I have know been told by the Electrical wholesaler I use that if I use a
100A MCB Isolator I don't need the armoured cable and that I can use
standard cables?

Also am I allowed to place the MCB in a lockable enclosure such that
someon=
e
without authorization cannot switch my power off?

Many thanks in advance for your reply

Paul

Paul

Yes you are correct with all that you say, except for one BIG thing...

You will need to supply and install a 100amp MCB isolator or switch fuse
isolator at the meter position to protect the armoured cable, as you will
b=
e
creating a submain installation.

The electricity board's fuse will protect just the meter tails that will
still be there.
