I know you said off-list, but I thought this might be of interest to all.
I am now successfully accessing samba shares by tunneling netbios over SSH
using PuTTY.

Very easy to do. Might be possible in a Windows only word but I haven't
tried as having a Linux box in the house makes all of this stuff so much
easier.
