Unfortunatly David, I don't think you are going to get a definitive answer
to this one :-)
My personal approach would be to go with cat5e, and if you can afford it
go for fibre to future proof the house, _IF_ you plan on being there for
10/15 years or more.
If you look at the market over the past 10/15 years and see how much data
is being thrown now compared to even just 5 years ago, you could argue
that fibre will be needed to support the latest & greatest codecs,
media
players and internet connections (who's to say what speed ISP's will be
chucking at you 10/15 years from now), but on the other hand if you look
at how compression has improved over the same time period you could argue
that fibre won't be needed because compression has gotten so good you can
fit it all down existing cables.
What are you planning on having in each room? That will play a major part
in your decision also.
Which ever way you go, just make sure you make it easy to pull new cable
to each location without too much effort.
