It's based on triangulation from the various GSM cells that the mobile
phone
is registered to, so it'll never be amazingly accurate.  In town centres it
might get as close a 20mtrs, but in the sticks, it's hopelessly inaccurate.
Right now I'm at home in a very poor signal area and only registered with 1
cell site, so it thinks I'm about 8 miles from where I actually am.

It does have its uses (monitoring a field force for instance), but only
down
to territory level, not road level.

There's quite a few of these services on the go now.

I signed up with one (Fleet Online) about a year ago, with thoughts of
HA applications based on where I was, where I was going etc., but the
accuracy currently doesn't seem to be good enough for anything useful.

I'm sure it'll be better and cheaper in the future.
