In my experience HyperTerminal can be a little bit of a bugger, a number of
times I've thought I've had problems with hardware/firmware only to find
that it's HyperTerminal that's playing up

I've been using Realterm http://realterm.sourceforge.net/

and found it to be much more reliable

As a test to see that the terminal emulator is working on the PC try
shorting pins 2&3 of the serial connector (Rx/TX loopback) you should
see
characters typed echoed back (provided you have no handshaking turned on)

Subject: [ukha_d] OT: Help with DV recorder/serial port
"sniffing"

Hi,

Being the family IT "expert", I've been tasked with looking into
this.
Dad has one of these:
http://www.datavideo-tek.com/navigation_frames/dv_bank/entire.htm
- a 60 Gb
DV recorder.
He wants to upgrade this to a 120 Gb drive.
This can, apparently be acomplised by connecting it to a PC serial port and
talking to the bios (or equivalent).

Trouble is, hyperterminal and it don't seem to get along, so I dunno if it
is busted or the cable is faulty or HT is set up wrong, or something else
completely.....

Does anyone know either a) anything about these things OR does anyone know
of something we can use to "listen" to the serial port to see if
the device
is trying to communicate, even if it is just gibberish (because the PC is
set up incorrectly)?

Many thanks,

Tony
