You are not wrong about the "horrendously expensive".

Auton are King of the Hill, and will ship to the UK... www.auton.com

Alternatively, www.displaydevices.com have a range called
"PlasmaLift" which
does exactly what it says on the tin. Don't have any feedback on what
they're like, though.
