Aashram

I'm not clear on what you've said below - did the bracket have play in it
before you slot the shelf on? I can't take mine apart now, but from what I
remember, the brackets were very solid - if the screws are all the way in,
there should be no play, and actually getting the shelf on should be a bit
of a challenge - i.e. it won't just slip on. As you say, the self-tappers
I
think do nothing other than stop the shelf from being pulled off easily,
they don't add a lot to the stability.

As for wall plug type, I'll defer to someone with stud walls; I just used
Screwfix plugs (the brown ones) on mine, but as I say, that's into a solid
wall.

The play is vertical.
I have brought them a few times and then ended up taking them back.
I bought some more because I saw the ones in ikea built up had no play
and that was in a stud wall. When I set them up the bracket has play in it
and two posts that fit into the holes in the shelfs that has play in it
I screwed in the locking screw (which is nothing more that a normal self
cutting screw)
and it does not stablise the shelf.

I am going to pull it down and go for it again.

any suggestions on what wall plugs to use ?

Are the brackets actually solid without the shelf on them? I've just done
my best to find some play in my shelves, but there's nothing there - very
solid.

My walls are plaster/breeze, and relatively straight, and as Dean said, I
used some fairly big screws to fit the bracket - probably at least 600mm.

It's not unheard of for Ikea to have a production fault that effects a lot
of the same product (it's happened to me). Is the play horizontal or
vertical?

yes peter that is one.
I have a stud wall does that make a difference ?
when I put the shelf on the brackets and turn
the "locking" screw there is still play in the shelf.
I have tried quite a few of them.
either that or the walls has to be dead straight and
even for it to work.

These are the ones without any visible support right?

If so, I've got 2 of them in my study with no wobble. Just screwed the
mounting bracket into the (solid) wall, slotted the shelf on, and tightened
up the small locking screws on the underside of the shelf.

Of course, I may have the wrong self in mind, there's a lot of stuff in the
Lack range.

I have thought the same but I have seen them setup elsewhere and this no
wobble

Quoting aashram (groups@xxxxxxx):

(you

Isn't that the way Ikea furniture is supposed to be?
