Agreed on the strength of plasterboard fixings - I have used http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=53615&id=12635
which you can buy in tens to fix TV brackets and handrails for stairs.

I have had no problems with stability of "supportless" shelves
either. Are there any proud bits behind the horizontal rods that need
easing into the wall? It definitley ned to be solid before fixing the
shelf, so check to see where it's rocking. Because of the leverage,
however, you will need fixings that can provide a lot of tension, much more
than conventional brackets or adjustable shelf rails.
