RE: Re: Disassembling a remote control (and still have it working ;-)

When I was "Station Engineer" for an RSL station - Coastal Radio,
I modified
some CD players to have remote start by wiring directly to the rear of the
buttons.

Everything was working fine all through rehersals but when the transmitter
was delivered and turned on we discovered a bit of a problem. The long
leads
to the remote starts on the mixing desk were picking up RF and locking all
the controls on the CD player.

This was overcome by fiting a tiny relay inside the CD player to
"press" the
button when the relay was operated. That completely cured the problem. I
have also modified Pace and Amstrad satellite receivers in a similar manner
but using Opto-Isolators across the buttons instead of relays.

Apart from the added benefit of electrical isolation, it also prevented any
potential problems with interference being picked up on the cable.

Probably total overkill in this situation though.
