RE: [OT] large tape backup

I've had a couple of people ask me to come up with a cost effective backup
solution for them over the last year or so - first was a mate who does a
lo=
t
of database development as a contractor and at the time we worked out that
the cheapest solution was to stick an IDE caddy into his all-SCSI machine
and just copy off the data to hard discs.

Then just this week someone else was talking about a multi Tb DVD server
an=
d
asked the same - what's the most cost effective way of backing all that
dat=
a
up? I looked at tape libraries etc and they came out at about =A316k for
th=
e
drive with another hefty wadge for the tapes ... It was - again - cheaper
t=
o
just have a duplicate set of drives!

An 80Gb IDE drive will cost what? =A360 or so? Hell, you'd be looking at
almost that for 80Gb of DDS4 tapes. :-(
