I found that the network failed to initialise on my VIA board when the
loading on the power supply got too much. The machine would boot but the
network was dead. (Lights on Ethernet connector out too).  Consistently
replacing the CD with a Slimline or removing the PCI card made it work
reliably. This was definitely a power issue and seemed to relate to the
'surge' at power on as the HD span up.
