When I first had broadband installed I had been too disorganized to get my
hardware. So a trip to PC World yielded a Zoom USB ADSL modem. I then
swapped to a Netgear ADSL Router. The speed difference was VERY noticeable.

P.S. I've got a Netgear DG834G router. IMHO don't bother! It regularly
drops
its connection and the firewall settings seem flakey, you often have to hit
'apply' in the firewall settings to get the rules to work. You don't need
to
change anything, just hit apply and they work again :-(
