Well it's good to know that the opportunity exists - I've only ever seen
switched control gear/starters for metal halide sources. In fact the last
few fibre optic projectors I'd seen that used dimmable metal halide lamps
used a graduated dimming wheel to progressively block out more light rather
than dimming the lamp directly!

Common misconception - discharge lighting is dimmable, but it aint
easy, so the advice is exactly as you state, be sitting down :-)

I've only ever seen it used in Film/TV/Photo lighting applications.
