That'll be me then :)

Consider me raised...

The username/password entry thing is the only option that you can
access with the BT style firmware on the routers. To flash them you
need to download the tool and firmware from the Efficient site -
should be fairly simple to find, drop me a line if not.

You then need to set your PC to the IP 192.168.254.1/24 (or
reconfigure the software if you know how) and start the TFTP server,
and point it to the kernel.f2k file that you should have from the
firmware zip file.

Then, connect the router directly to the network card on your PC,
switch off, hold down the little button on the back by the console
port, and switch it on... you'll need to wait for a few seconds, and
should see the router loading the kernel from the network (your PC).

Then, you can telnet to 192.168.254.254, and you should be able to
just hit enter to login. Then enter the following commands:

format disk
sync
save

then, load the 'DSL tools' program, and upload the new firmware files
(restore all files option). You should then be able to reboot the
router and all will be well.

That's about as well as I can describe it via email, without writing a
whole article on it - the main bit people forget to do is the
format/sync/save bit.

If you have any other probs, drop me an email and I'll see what I can do.
