It uses MPEG2, but not VOB files.  DVDs can be created from the files
quite easily though.  There are 3 quality settings.  "Basic" is
just
that.  The next level is better than VHS (IMO), and the "Best"
level is
very good indeed.  Its certainly as good as any source I have to feed it
with!
