RE: tivo newbie questions

"then I realised that that is what a tivo is"

Without getting all evangelical about about it, no not really.
The recordings are just a tiny part of the Tivo, it's the automatic
scheduling from the daily updated EPG, it's the trick play stuff, like
starting to watch a film while the end of it is still being recorded, like
rewinding live TV (that you're not recording) to repeat a bit of missed
action, like not realising the new series of TopGear started last week -
but
Tivo did and recorded it anyway... etc, etc, etc.

There are several hard drive recorders available, but they are basically
dumb digital VCRs (except for Sky+ which is still playing catch-up with
Tivo
in all areas apart from dual recording), it really is like comparing Ford
Model T's with a new Ferrari...

Subject: [ukha_d] tivo newbie questions

Hello,

I haven't had a tivo before but I was looking at those dvd recorders
with built-in disc drive and then I realised that that is what a tivo
is. Does a tivo use the same compression algorithms that a dvd recorder
does; does it use mpegs and vob files etc? How does the quality
compare to (1) vhs, (2) s-vhs, and (3) dvdr? Thanks.
