This technique is widely used - do a google search for "whole house
fan", with the quotes to keep the number of hits down :-)

One of the most effective use of whole house fans is when you have a
climate that is hot by day, cool by night, and house that has a lot
of thermal capacity.  The large thermal mass limits the rate of heat
rise during the day.   The whole house fan is then run overnight to
bring in cooler air, and flush out the structure and attic heat.
