The official answer:

1: Hang onto to faulty goods

2: Get form C&E 1179 from the local customs office.

3: Do not destroy the faulty Roomba until you have received the OK
from HMC&E. In principle, they have the right to inspect the goods /
dispose of them themselves to make sure they are really gone.

4: You WILL have to pay the duty / VAT on import of the new one, but
will be able to claim it back provided you've got C&E 1179 filled in
an accepted OK.
