I bought one of these (USBUIRT) for a new HTPC/HA pc for a plasma
viewing area. The other pc has slinke, Homeseer, MLserver etc. on
it. It's seems to work fine using all my pronto learned and
dowloaded IR codes. Had a porblem with learning though - could not
get it to learn commands from a LG LCD TV remote. I was using the
MLserver plugin for the learning. The only software provided is the
windows usb drivers and a girder file. There is no software
applications, for learning, sending ir, etc - it needs to be used
with 3rd party software like (mostly) girder. I am using it with ML
server and it's working very well indeed as an IR commander. Don't
really use the IR receive feature as all commands are sent via
wireless airpanel with mainlobby. The pc does not get ir commands.
The ir database for my devices was built with the plugin which lets
you cut and paste IR codes from pronto edit and assign names to the
ir commands for use in ML commands. There is a macro facility with
delay and parameter passing. It's a simple but effective
combination.
The hardware is simple but well built and IR range with the built-in
blaster seems very good. It gets power from the usb bus. There seems
to be some issues with using the jack output port with xantech
splitters due to voltage mis-match. But I think I read on their
forum that it works with amplified xantech splitters.
All things considered, it's relatively cheap and does the job if you
have the software setup in your HA config. Not that useful if you
are not using one of the software apps that support it.
