I totally agree.  I built a shuttle PC at 4 this morning with XP_SP1 and
I think it now needs a rebuild :(  I've got another to do a bit later on
which I think I'll do with the original version.

Weird.

Is it just me or does an 'out of the box' fresh install of XP Pro SP1
seem to be more unreliable these days?

I've re-installed several PC's just recently and applied all the updates
but find general operation to be a bit unreliable (for example explorer
windows hanging occasionally etc). No particular repeatable combination
of hardware though as it varies from PC to PC.
