If I have a wireless PDA, then I don't need the iPod, except perhaps as
an expensive interface to thee head unit!
The thing I have in mind would be permanently installed - not a
collection of portable devices plugged together (and probably left on
the passenger seat!)

Alpine have just produced a new box to let you connect and control an iPod
via an AINet 2004 headunit. So in theory u could connect an ipod, a
wireless pda and an alpine head unit and do what you want.
