Getting input into a PC.

It struck me while reading the post about detecting a car in a space
that I have the bits lying around to set up quite a lot of
automation.

I'm the kind of guy that prefers to tinker, and have a go at more DIY
solutions than buy something off the shelf.

As I see it my main 2 arriers are

1) Cableing. The house has nothing, apart from a few cables I have
tacked to the wall, not very pretty, or scaleable.

2) PC interface. How to interface the various elements with the PC. I
quite like the idea of using 1-wire sensors & switches for most of the
remote stuff, but this is confounded by 1) and the way I have to wire
isn't good for 1wire, I have to have multiple branches to keep it
tidy. I don't suppose anyone has any of the 1-wire hubs going sheap do
they?
