You could bury or mount on a wall a modified cheap metal detector
I'm sure CPC or Maplin would have something - most are waterproof too ;-)

I've got a driveway sensor that detects large metal objects moving -
doesn't
detect stationary vehicles though, only when they move. Got it from Comfort
in the UK. May not be exactly what you're after but may work.
