RE: Re: OT: CD Prices at CD WOW

I still can't see how cdwow was held to ransom. If an artist releases
internationally, why can't we buy from abroad? The record company
still gets their money. What is their problem with people legitimately
buying their music?
Ooh, don't get me started. The trouble generally is that global (major)
record companies have offices that operate individual territories based on
sales within their territory. Every CD imported into the EU is one less
sal=
e
for the European office of the major label, and one more for the Far East's
(or wherever its coming in from) territory office. They are very
competitiv=
e
and promotional budgets, etc worldwide are assigned on the basis of profits
generated by each territory.=20
The BPI are representing the interests of UK based record label - every CD
they can stop being imported improves the profits of the UK label, and
henc=
e
improves their %age of the major label's global budget...=20
Its worth noting that the BPI represent mainly major record labels. You
hav=
e
to pay a lot of cash to join as a label. Most independent labels are
member=
s
of a separate organization called AIM (Association of Independent Music)
which is far more sensible on such issues.=20
Personally, as a record label owner (albeit a one-man-band), I am all for
freedom of sales, and oppose this BPI intervention. I am questioning its
legality too. At present I am unsure if the =A32 surcharge applies to my

n
CDwow sold CD (http://www9.cd-wow.com/detail_results.php?product_code=3D821=
9
<http://www9.cd-wow.com/detail_results.php?product_code=3D8219>
), and how =
I
benefit from this. I think it will, and I don't believe I will.=20
It is an outrage, and I would encourage all of you to write to the BPI to
complain.
Thanks
